Kiki's update - 22 June

Kiki's right leg's been amputated yesterday. The nurse updated me that the he's gotten back his appetite today and he's been such a good boy! Medicating him is a bliss, she said. "He'd open his mouth big big when you medicate him! He's very cooperative!" He'd be warded till his wounds are completely healed, then we'd have to board him at a cat shelter till he gets adopted. The vet bill till today is $1107. Funds gathered so far: $1307

Thank you everyone, for the funds and most importantly, the encouragement all of you had given.

Our hope right now is to find a good home for Kiki. Please do spread the word again. Trust me... he's a good home cat to keep, despite being 3-legged.

Kiki's Update on 16 June

Kiki's left leg is recovering slowly but his right leg is very swollen and had stiffened. If the condition worsens, we might have to get the right leg amputated. Meanwhile, during these few days, Kiki is under observation... they will try to flex his muscles, and hopefully, it'll loosen up abit for better recovery.

Kiki aka Lego - Victim of irresponsible pet ownership

Kiki, a 1.5 years old male Tabby was 1st seen by a caregiver from Holland Village, wearing a collar, roaming the void decks in early 2007. Concerned, she asked around for the identity of the owner. Turns out to be a 13 year old girl.... whose mother had probably picked up a stray kitten back then to keep her daughter company.... just like a toy. Kiki is a sweet but timid boy. He dodges people yet want to come near, yearning the affection which he was
deprived of. He was unsterilised, and free to roam.

After much convincing from the caregiver, they agreed to pay HALF the sterilisation fees.

However, they were still unable to keep Kiki indoor. He went missing for 1 week after sterilisation...

Kiki was found on the 7 June with parts of his skin and flesh from the hind legs ripped off, and rotting away. God knows what happened to him during his disappearance. Perhaps, it was a car accident? Perhaps not. He was probably too hungry when he gathered enough strength to come out for food when the feeder was feeding on 7th June 2007. However his injury was serious. Kiki was then rushed to the vet. While putting him into the carrier, some parts of his flesh fell off.

According to the vet, Kiki needs at least a month or even 2, to recover.. Many parts of his skin and flesh were ripped.

The "owner" is unable to afford his medical bills and had suggested to put Kiki to sleep.

Kiki is a strong cat, he's not sick or paralysed, there is no reason to put him down. The caregiver is appealling for help to save him and to move him off the streets and the harsh environment. We need contributions to pay Kiki's vet fees which is going to be hefty.

KiKi, has been renamed "Lego" at the clinic.

Received a call on Saturday from Phyllis with regards to our flickr album. She's asked if we had put up the pics of the kittens with flu.... Sorry everyone...I forgot to add the captions...

Those are pics of the 5 kittens and their mom... they are recovering from flu. Phy and her maids have been cleaning their eyes regularly but some of their eyes are still shut. Thanks to Phy, Mei Mei ad Lala, for their TLC and hardwork. We know they are doing their best...

In Loving Memory of Mimi aka "Mouse"...

Mimi was a resident cat at the cattery and was the sweetest cat. She was very protective of all her feline friends. When Pink Panther was ill, Mimi would often stroke Pink Panther with her cheek to comfort her. When Pink Panther was getting Reiki treatment, Mimi would snuggle up to the Reiki Master as well just to keep close to Pink Panther. She was similarly affectionate and caring to all the cats she shared the Sick Room with.

Mimi, rescued from the Telok Blangah area, had been battling kidney & liver failure for the last 4 years. She collapsed yesterday and was not able to get up anymore. When we visited her at the cattery last night, she still struggled to get up to greet us, despite not having the strength to do so. She passed away early this morning.

Mimi is now free from suffering. Please do keep her in your prayers and continue to send her loving kindness.

Pongo was rescued by a friend, Vincent on 7 Dec 2006.
Everyone thought that the dog is unlikely to survive. But just look at him NOW!

Pongo is recovering very well. He is eating very well everyday. Now he is taking his Prescription i/d formula diet daily due to his non-stop diaharrea eariler. His fur is growing nicely except for his lower portion at his hip, the open sore still needs time to recover. We suspect that pongo was confined in a very small cage for a very long time which has caused his open wounds at his hip and also taking the habit to pee and poo on his own body. He is still abit nervous and will pee whenever u want to touch his body or want him to stand up to change his paper. Dr Au said that is still alright as it is better than he cannot pee. However, pongo has the problem of pushing out his faeces. Most of the time i have to help him to remove his faeces by using the cotton buds. Pongo now try to move around more often. I happened to see him a few time walking and smell around the room when alone. And twice he has went out the room to the backyard and sit under the tree. He will let us pat his head and sometime will smell us from behind when we are cleaning up his sleeping place.

Pink Panther was found on the streets of Old Airport Road. She cared for the other abandoned little kittens despite the fact that they are not her own flesh and blood. Pink Panther suffered from chronic Stomatits and had fallen sick too many times to remain on the streets. She was later diagnosed with FIV, and was sent to a Shelter soon after. She is a fighter though... no matter how many times she'd collapsed, she'd always manage to get up on her feet again.
Dear Pink Panther finally succumbed to the illness. She will definitely be remembered...for her loving kindness and strength.

Please also say a lil prayer for Scarlet, who left us on 3rd Feb, and Kheilly, on 4th Feb. They will too be dearly missed.

2 Feb 2007...

Got a call from Phyllis in the morning to inform me that we may lose Pink Panther today. Pink Panther, who's now skin and bones, had collapsed with mouth wide open and panting heavily. She was also passing motion uncontrollably.
With a heavy heart, I starting hoping that she could quickly pass on in peace.

Pink Panther has been and is still as brave and strong-willed as ever. We thought we would have lost her last year. The vet back then verified that her blood count had dropped beyond hope. Even a Reiki Master told us her energy level was negative. It's indeed a surprise she could pull through till today.

After work, Beck and I went down to Phy's to take a look at Pink Panther. To our surprise, she actually got up on her feet and walked to us. Our poor FIV-strickened cat.... she's a warrior! Is she telling us that she'll still stand strong? Whatever she wants, I hope she knows that we are all extremely proud of her.

Vandalism & Animal Abuse at Blk-512 Serangoon North Ave 4

A community cat was splashed with green paint by a vandal who also failed to leave the corridor walls alone.

The cat is not at the vet. There's a potential adopter who can only adopt next year. Meanwhile, a temporary foster is needed.

In Memory of Dash...

Everybody loves Dash. Why is Dash such a special cat? Because he's exceptionally affectionate. Even in his dying moments, if you walk up to him, he'll struggle to lift his head and emit a funny sounding meow+purr to acknowledge your presence, also his way of thanking you for visiting him.

Dash passed away today, 2 December 2006 at about 10:45 am. His battle with blood cancer is over. He's now free from his shell of pain and suffering. A perfect, healthy and pure image of him resides in our heart.

We will always remember the darling little boy, with the deformed paw. He's ever so affectionate and sweet to humans.

Dash and Pink Panther had a Reiki session

We hired Lizzie from My Healing Hands to come down to look at Dash and Pink Panther. She sensed that Dash has a sharp pain at the back of his front leg. His energy level is very low and is very uncomfortable.

Pink Panther, is supposedly physically very weak. But her strong will had kept her alert till today.... Let's hope she manages to fight this battle...

Lizzie suggested that if we sense our pets dying, we should try to help ourselves overcome the grief and accept this fact. Once we let go, then our pets can leave in peace. Also, refrain from crying out loud as it would make it harder for the pet to leave peacefully.

After seeing how much Dash had suffered, we have come to terms with the fact that we cannot hold him back anymore. It's definitely time to let him go....

Ellen's(sorry we thought was Helen) an elderly lady and she goes around collecting cans, carton boxes and old newspapers to take care of herself and these 200+ cats under her care. Sometimes, she starves along with the cats when there's no money for food. When she has some cash, she feeds the cats a diet of canned baked beans, bread and barley. Vegan cats...way to go!

Ok, that's besides the point...please read the story below and help in whatever ways you could. May I request you folks to help seek donations for the following items:

1) Medical supplies - cotton pads & swabs, hydrogen peroxide, eat mite drops, deworm pills, etc.
2) Canvas curtains and shelvings
3) Clean towels for the cats
4) Cat food, treats and toys
5) Financial aid for sterilising her cats and sponsor transport for her to do so

The Adoption Story of "Mystique"...the lucky kitten from Old Airport Road
From the desk of Mystique's adopter...

It is human nature to want what you can’t have, and to tire of what you do have. The people, creatures or objects that are out of our grasp seem irresistibly attractive, but once we finally have them, their lustre pales a little.

What child doesn’t want a pet? At the zoo or in the pet shop, domestic animals are undeniably cute: they’re cuddly, wriggly and active, these tiny little balls of fur with impossibly big eyes that look hopefully up into your face. Like every other child, our daughter Anya wanted a pet. She didn’t mind if it was a dog or a cat (or a dragon, she said). And my husband and I thought it would be a good idea for her to have a companion as well, so we set about the business of adopting a kitten.

Now that we have had Mystique for just over a month, she doesn’t seem as valuable a commodity as she had been in our imagination. Yes, she is as cute as ever and ridiculously affectionate – but she wakes us up at the most unreasonable hours of the night because she’s decided she wants to play. Sure we could shut her out of our bedroom, but she’d only sit outside and wail. Or worse still, she’d go and wail outside Anya’s door and wake her up too!

When I leave for work in the morning, Mystique clings on to my jeans with her claws and howls at the top of her voice as I try to make my way to the front door without treading on her. You can’t open the fridge door or the shoe cabinet without her trying to climb inside. Sometimes she thrusts her smelly little chew-toy into my hands, or worse, my face.

In other words, she is really quite inconvenient.

However, when my husband and I made the decision to adopt a kitten, we knew that it would be for life. Should we leave the country for good, Mystique would come with us. Should she fall ill or injure herself, we would make sure she was looked after. In other words, she has become a member of the family. She is ours – and is our responsibility. Just as we would never dream of giving Anya away, we will not be able to bring ourselves to abandon Mystique or give her up just because she can be a little troublesome.

It’s funny to see Anya interact with her. At 3½ years old, Anya is ready for a playmate. She reads her stories, tries to carry her, calls her “baby”, and strokes her at every available opportunity. She also growls at her, tries to smack her and shouts at her when Mystique does not respond the way she wants her to. More than once I’ve heard Anya say: “I’ll give you back to Fiona (Mystique’s foster parent)!” This little cat has become the sibling that we haven’t been able to give her, with all the love and all the rivalry that that kind of relationship involves.

Just by having to live with a newcomer in the house, Anya has had to learn patience and a measure of tolerance (as has Mystique!). She has had to learn that she cannot act out or hurt her just because she is upset, or just because Mystique isn’t behaving the way she wants her to: hard lessons for a toddler to learn, especially when she has always been the centre of everyone’s attention. Anya has been the princess of the family her whole life (she’s the only grand-daughter on both sides of the family), so it’s time she learned a bit about sharing and about responsibility. I truly believe that this little cat will help develop our daughter’s character in a way that nothing else can.

Inconvenient though she may be, Mystique is also the sweetest little thing. She reaches out often to touch Anya’s face with her soft paws and puts up with all her silly antics. She likes to put her little face close to mine in the morning and mew softly until I open my eyes and stroke her. When we come home in the evenings, she comes rushing out to greet us, and will select one of us to follow around the house until she finally gets picked up and made a fuss of.

So we take the good with the not so good, but most of all, we just enjoy the newest furry addition to our family.

Tom Tom is recovering from his flu. He's becoming more energenic... and kinda like a bully now. He hops around but would run back to you if you calls out his name. This boy even tried to pick fights.... with the weaker ones like Dash! Wat a bully!

Pink Panther is Dying...

Pink Panther will be discharged from CAC today. The vet pronounced Pink Panther hopeless because all her red blood cells are completely eaten up. We will take her back to the cattery and let her roam until her time's up. Please say a prayer for her that she'll pass on peacefully.

Pink Panther used to be a very happy girl, roaming around the Old Airport area. When Fiona found her, she was bleeding from the mouth and the vet diagnosed it as stomatitis. Stomatitis is the most painful ailment that can happen to a little animal. The mouth and gum is completely covered with ulcers such that the cat cannot even eat or swallow. The cat eventually starves to death.

When the vet tried to syringe Pink Panther with listerine to disinfect the ulcers, it was too painful and Pink Panther bit Fiona so hard her wrists had gaping holes oozing blood. Pink Panther was later tested positive for FIV. But none of us gave up hope on Pink Panther and wanted her to live out her remaining life peacefully, so she was boarded at the cattery.

Fiona will bring her back to the cattery today and let her roam around until her time is up. Please pray for her and visit her if you can this weekend.

Dash has been warded again at Companion Animal Clinic. He could not eat and vomitted at home... He's on drip now. But we do have a chance. Dr Miles said he will make a stool test to check if it's some kinda virus which caused Pancytopenia. If it is, then that could be treatable.

Meanwhile, Dash has to be warded for drips, steroids and antibiotic boosts...

Hang in there, Dash. We can't wait to hold you in our arms again...

Spoke with Dr Robin Au last night. He confirmed that Dash has been diagnosed with Pancytopenia... an uncommon disease whereby the bone marrow fail to produce red/white blood cells as well as platelets. Right now, there's an urgent need to kick up the generating of blood cells by supplements. Not sure if it'll work but we will try...

Meanwhile.... just got a call from Phyllis. Last afternoon she attempted to save a black kitten on the road and fell flat... She injured her leg and chin... :(

Dash has been diagnosed with blood cancer yesterday. He's been warded at Pet Clinic for a week, and getting his blood sample was a chore. Dash has real low blood pressure and according to the vet, his blood thickened too quickly.

I'm not sure how many of you can remember Dash. Probably those who visit Phyllis's cat shelter often would know. He's the boy whom Phyllis rather name him Humpty Dumpty. Dash was picked up last year at Telok Blangah Crescent. Both his hind legs are much longer then his front legs, making him look like he's tilting his bum all the time. His right leg is deformed. twisted and short...so his right paw is just hanging.

Once, Phyllis let him roam the living room and he tumbled down the stairs. Poor boy cannot climb down stairs....

Please do send your love to him. We plan to discharge Dash hopefully today. He yearns for human affection all the time.... If you see him, do give him your warmest hugs...

Oh, by the way, the "Pledge a Cat" campaign is going well. From the launch of the campaign about 2 weeks ago, we already have about 4 "pledgers". Our cats can finally have owners!
